Tribal Bag

This tribal bag (mafrash) comes from the Kurds of Qouchan in Khorasan province in the north-east of Iran. It reflects many different motifs, techniques and colours. In this case, the bag was made in two parts and then joined. The sides of the bag have been opened. It sports spectacular tassels, individually wound in coloured cotton. It was purchased on the street in Teheran in 1973 from an itinerant carpet seller.
